Topic: History of global healthcare quality movement

Introduction

Florence nightingale who is believed to be the mother of quality movement in the health sector. She said three things.

  • These statistics will enable us to ascertain what diseases and ages press most heavily on the resources of hospitals. Here she was able to envisage that there must be a gap or problem to identify if you intend to improve. With the help of statistics like cases recorded, age etc., we will be able to know where to put in efforts in improving quality.
  • They will show subscribers how their money is being spent, what amount of good really being done with it, or whether the money is doing mischief rather than good.
  • To understand God’s thoughts we must study statistics, for these are the measure of his purpose. Without statistics or data, it’s difficult to improve. So, quality initially we say is founded on data and that’s what she called statistics

The images above are some of the pioneers of quality which we have provided link on the page to read about them.

Ernest Codman was noted for his advocacy of the “End Results Idea”.

Avedis Donabedian is a more recent contributor to the healthcare quality movement.

In 1996, he published the article “the evaluation of medical care programs”, which presents his quality model based on structure, process, and outcomes.

The structure refers to the facilities, staff, and equipment available to deliver healthcare.

The process refers to the delivery itself.

The outcomes are about the results of the treatment and the benefits to the patient.
